Impreza: History
The name Impreza is probably Subaru’s most iconic badge, harking back to Subaru’s illustrious rallying thoroughbred heritage.

In 2008, Impreza and WRX STI became two separate model lines, with today’s WRX STI carrying Impreza’s heritage forward to the modern day.

Impreza became a standalone model – a hatch equipped with a Boxer engine and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, offering a different, distinctly Subaru option in the sea of conventional C segment cars.

Impreza Today: Positioning, Buyer Profile and Competitors
Today, Impreza will continue the position that was established when the model made its debut as a hatchback – a viable All-Wheel Drive vehicle for people who don’t necessarily want or need a conventional 4x4 sized vehicle.

Not every buyer would necessarily want an All-Wheel Drive vehicle the size of an SUV, because of tight country lanes, multi-storey car parks or they just don’t really like them. Impreza provides All-Wheel Drive capability in a compact body and provides a different option to these buyers.

Impreza is focused on providing drivers with complete confidence; whatever the weather or road surface. It is as much about stability and traction on a wet motorway at speed, as it is getting up an icy hill in the countryside. Subaru drivers love the confidence that always on Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides them.

Subaru Global Platform
Impreza is the first Subaru in the UK to be launched on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP). SGP is a modular platform that will form the foundation for each new Subaru going forward, including adaptability for all powertrains, including diesel, hybrid, electric and alternative fuel.

The Subaru Global Platform (SGP) was developed as part of the “six initiatives to enhance the Subaru brand” proposal included in the mid-term management plan, Prominence 2020, which was announced in 2014.

The platform is the fundamental technology for all next-generation Subaru models going forward in conjunction with Boxer engines, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight. Impreza is the second model to be launched on the new platform, following XV’s debut at Geneva earlier in the year.

For Impreza, SGP provides a 40% increase in body strength and significantly increased rigidity for a tighter chassis response as well as performing highly in crash testing. In Japanese NCAP testing, the Subaru Impreza won the Grand Prix Award for earning the highest score on record; 199.7 points out of 208.

SGP has been engineered with two main objectives in mind; dynamic quality and safety performance.

Dynamic Quality
One of the core benefits of the SGP is improved driving capability and dynamic feel.

For a dynamic driving feel, straight line stability and handling needs to be high, noise and vibration needs to be low and the ride comfort needs to be compliant yet firm.

Because the chassis is more rigid and stable in a straight line, steering response is significantly improved which increases the driver’s confidence in the car allowing them to react to hazards and position the car exactly where needed.

The chassis frame work is also smoother which adds to the torsional rigidity of the platform.

Noise and Vibration
A key development goal for SGP was to reduce floor and steering vibration.

The chassis design effectively disperses chassis and seat resonance which cuts back on vibrations from the steering, floor and seats.

This result has been achieved by adopting adhesive for structures across the platform which suppresses deformation of flanges and sections of the chassis.

Ride Comfort
The ride quality has been designed to be firm, but comfortable.

Suspension mount rigidity has been increased which ensures the damper moves as intended by ensuring the mounting point has minimal flex and is holding the damper securely in place.

The rear stabilisers are also mounted directly to the chassis which reduces body roll compared to previous models.

Safety Performance
SGP has potential to maintain the highest standard of collision safety through to 2025, as its structure has been designed to incorporate a high strength design and more durable materials.

A by-product of the various improvements to the chassis is significantly enhanced emergency handling; the vehicle responds quickly, even at a higher speed.

Body strength has been increased by 40% allowing the chassis to absorb more energy in the event of a collision. This has been achieved by increasing the cross section of the frame and using hot press moulded sections at key points on the chassis.

A smoother frame layout is also used with three conduction routes versus two conduction routes with a smooth outer leg versus the previously used dog-leg design.

Safety Systems
Safety is a key focus of the all-new Impreza, with a suite of advanced driver assist systems in addition to traditional safety equipment.

EyeSight
EyeSight is Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology, which acts as a second pair of eyes for the driver.

EyeSight was developed with three objectives in mind; safety, lowering carbon emissions by reducing incident congestion and economic effects of this by reducing time sat in traffic as a result.

Subaru have been developing driver assistance technology for nearly 30 years;

  • 1989 – System development starts.
  • 1999 – Active Driving Assist (ADA), EyeSight’s predecessor, is launched.
  • 2003 – New ADA developed – “Sensor Fusion System” featuring stereo camera and radar.
  • 2006 – SI- Cruise Control by laser radar.
  • 2008 – EyeSight introduced to Japanese market with stereo camera only.
  • 2010 – EyeSight v.2 introduced in North America.
  • 2014 – EyeSight v.3 introduced into Europe.
  • 2017 – EyeSight is being introduced into all Subaru markets globally.

In the UK, Outback was the first model to be fitted with EyeSight followed by Levorg in early 2017 and Forester in Autumn 2017. Going forwards, EyeSight will be introduced across the range.

The institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis in Japan produced a study of Subaru vehicles involved in accidents 2010-2014 and found that there were 61% fewer accidents involving EyeSight equipped cars versus cars without EyeSight.

Globally, the milestone of 1 million EyeSight-equipped vehicles on the road was hit in 2016.

EyeSight uses two stereo cameras to capture three-dimensional colour images with excellent image recognition, and is nearly as capable as the human eye. EyeSight can recognise vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, pedestrians, and lane markings and can differentiate between these and determine the general traffic conditions. This differs from radar based collision avoidance systems which only recognise if there is an object present or not, meaning these systems can respond to objects that are not a risk, such as skips or road signs.

With an emphasis on real-world tests and evaluations, EyeSight has been developed to correspond exclusively to the individual country’s traffic conditions.

One camera is mounted each side of the rear-view mirror to monitor the road and traffic ahead for potential hazards up to 110 metres up the road. EyeSight takes an image from each camera and compares these images to determine the distance of this object. The larger the displacement of each image, the closer the object is.

Depending on the vehicle’s speed, accidents can be completely avoided and the severity significantly reduced at higher speeds.

EyeSight consists of six different technologies;

Technology

Description

Pre-Collision Braking

EyeSight will alert the driver of a potential collision using a visual and audible warning.  If the driver does not take evasive action, the brakes will be applied automatically to either prevent the accident entirely or reduce the severity of an impact depending on the vehicle speed.  If the driver brakes but does not apply enough pressure, the system will increase braking force.

Pre-Collision Throttle Management

If the car is parked facing an obstacle, EyeSight will warn (visual and audible) the driver if they accidentally select drive instead of reverse.  The system will also cut engine output to help avoid a frontal collision.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adjusts vehicle speed to maintain a set distance from the car in front.  

Lane Departure & Sway Warning

The driver will be alerted with a visual and audible warning if the vehicle sways or departs its lane without indicating.

Lane Keep Assist

The system will offer gentle steering control if the vehicle is about to deviate from its lane at approximately 40mph or above.

Lead Vehicle Start Alert

It will prompt the driver, with a visual and audible warning, that traffic ahead has started moving.

 

Active Safety Systems
In addition to EyeSight, Impreza is fitted with a number of systems to aid the driver with everyday manoeuvres such as reversing out of bays, and driving on twisty roads, leaving them to fully focus on the road.

High Beam Assist & steering responsive headlights
Impreza is fitted with bi-functional projector LED lights, with a single bulb enabling High Beam Assist to switch between high and low beam automatically. High Beam Assist operates via a single-lens camera, which is installed in the rear view mirror and detects when an onward car is approaching.

The lights are also steering responsive, turning to the left or right depending on the driver’s steering input and illuminates more of the corner.

Both technologies enhance visibility at night, and provide a safe, reassuring experience for the driver.

Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)
Impreza is the third Subaru in Europe to be fitted with the Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) suite of safety technologies.

The system helps the driver to change lanes on the motorway safely or detect hard to see hazards when completing low speed manoeuvres. SRVD is a radar-based system, with radars fitted beneath the Impreza’s tail lamps and covered by the rear bumper, detecting vehicles to either side of the car.

SRVD is a package of three technologies, designed to alert the driver to potential hazards behind the vehicle:

  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD) detects vehicles in the driver’s blind spots to the rear of the car, and alerts drivers to their presence with a subtle LED light on the mirrors.
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA) warns the driver if another vehicle approaches the rear of the car in a neighbouring lane. If the driver attempts to change lanes at that moment, the system warning light flashes.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) issues a visual and audible alert to warn the driver of vehicles passing behind the car when reversing out of a parking space.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is Subaru’s unique All-Wheel Drive system. Subaru’s system is completely symmetrical front to rear, left to right. The advantage of this combination over a traditional 4WD set up is the weight of the engine and gearbox are spread across the front axle with equal length drive shafts, resulting in perfect weight distribution across the chassis as well as a straight route for traction to all wheels.

 Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a permanent system, equipping Impreza with drive to all four wheels whether off-road in a muddy field or on a rainy motorway.

An active torque split system is installed in Impreza, which is specifically designed for Lineartronic equipped cars. Multi Plate Transfer (MPT) adjusts torque distribution front to rear to suit changing driving conditions with a base torque split of 60:40 biased to the front. The advantage of this system is it is user friendly, with no driver input required and adds reassurance for the driver that they will always have traction when it is required.

Boxer Engine
Boxer Engines are integral to what makes a Subaru a Subaru, the engine takes its name from the punch-counterpunch motion of the horizontal pistons within a lightweight, aluminium-alloy engine block.

Using a Boxer engine means that the engine can be positioned in line with the drivetrain for maximum transfer of power. Many other engines are transverse or perpendicular, which can require additional drivetrain components to transfer power, which results in reduced vehicle efficiency when compared to a Boxer engine.

The punch-counterpunch movements of the pistons balance each other out, which means the engine is smoother with reduced vibrations and noise. Additionally, the unit provides a lower centre of gravity and in turn, exquisite handling and poise plus greatly reduced roll when cornering.

Impreza will come with a choice of a 1.6 or 2.0 Boxer engine in the UK.

1.6
The 1.6 engine is from the FB series, and is port injected. 70% of the components in the engine have been redesigned.

The compression ratio has been increased from 10.5:1 to 11.0:1, the overall engine weight has been reduced by 14kgs, 1.1kg from the cylinder heads, 1.2kg from the crank pulley and 1.8kgs from the cylinder block.   

Rotational inertia has been reduced by 6%, vibration reduced by 5% and torsional rigidity has been improved by 10%. Gas flow into the combustion chamber has also been improved.

The series of revisions have ensured that vibration and noise are significantly reduced, and acceleration response has been improved for a more linear feel.

2.0
The 2.0 is also from the FB series of engines and was fitted in the outgoing XV, and is direct injected. 80% of the engine has been redesigned, including a 12kg weight reduction. This is the first time Impreza hatch has been available with the larger 2.0 litre engine in the UK range.

The compression ratio has been increased from 10.5:1 to 12.5:1, and a new tumble generation valve and port internal baffle has been fitted to the intake which revises air flow in the intake, increasing airflow into the cylinder in order achieve a better mixture and improved fuel efficiency. Another result of development has led to the highest brake thermal efficiency in its class.

Fuel cooling has been harnessed in conjunction with reduced pressure loss throughout the intake and exhaust systems for increased power versus outgoing Impreza.

The rigidity of the engine block has been increased, and additional mounting points help to minimise vibrations and reduce noise across various engine operating ranges. In addition, this adds to a more consistent feel between acceleration performance and the engine noise.

Lineartronic Transmission
Lineartronic is the first Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) adopted for AWD use. Lineartronic has been designed specifically for use with Boxer engines and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to optimise fuel consumption via a stepless gear ratio and optimal power band.

Lineartronic combines a torque converter with lockup damper and a CVT system which offers a wider ratio coverage than a traditional automatic transmission, which improves drivability and fuel economy. The torque converter also includes a creep facility for ease of use in traffic.

On Lineartronic equipped petrol models, Single pinion planetary gears and a hydraulic multi-disc clutch are combined for forward/reverse changeover and this is located after the secondary pulley.

The lockup damper specially designed for Lineartronic has significantly improved the damping of torque fluctuations, meaning the typical CVT “surge” has been dramatically reduced as well as providing the driver with a realistic acceleration response. The auto stepped speed control matches engine noise to acceleration performance.

For the best of both worlds, a manual mode is also included which can be selected via the gear lever or paddle shift on the steering wheel (on 2.0 Impreza only). The driver has the option to use this facility on a temporary basis for flexibility by using the paddles when the gear selector is in the Drive position, and the system returns to drive mode should no further paddle input be received. For additional traction, the driver can choose to set off in 2nd gear by putting the gear selector into manual and flicking the upshift paddle.

For Impreza, the ratio coverage has been widened and the weight of the transmission has been reduced by 7.8kgs versus the outgoing car. This increases acceleration performance and fuel efficiency. 

Impreza Design
Subaru’s design philosophy for Impreza is DYNAMIC x SOLID – a dynamic urban influenced design contrasted against a fit-for-purpose aesthetic, form backing function in a well-designed package with nothing extra added.

Exterior
The design philosophy has been diffused into a Sporty & Advanced package.

The design is a tougher, more dynamic iteration of Impreza with the Subaru hexagonal grille and hawk-eye headlight family face, reminiscent of the profile of a Boxer engine.

The design is built on the proportions of outgoing Impreza, but with sharper lines focused towards the rear of the vehicle. The wings are also contoured to emphasise the wheel arches, hinting at All-Wheel Drive capability. The wheels are 17-inch alloys, which are one inch larger than the outgoing Impreza’s.

At the rear, the lamps are positioned to jut out from the shoulder line on the body where the profile lines converge to create a dynamic appearance.

Functional elements are also included to ensure Impreza is fit for purpose, such as a raked back windscreen and lower roofline at the rear to increase aerodynamic performance.

Impreza is equipped with keyless entry and push button start. The driver’s door handle has a touch sensor to open and lock the doors, and the button starts the engine when the brake is depressed.

Interior
The all-new Impreza’s interior has been designed to make sure the driver is free to focus on the road ahead and enjoy driving the car.

The Interior design philosophy has been translated into a Bold & Refined theme which mirrors the exterior. The dash profile is heavily sculptured and is a continuous piece with metallic surrounds on the instrument panel, steering wheel and gear stick.  

The seats have been designed with a sculpted shape to provide the driver with support in key areas and make long distance drives comfortable. The fabric on the seats is in a contrast design of black fabric and black woven tricot material.

The quality of soft touch plastics and finishes have been improved across the interior, without losing the functionality and hard-wearing features that Subaru customers love.

Multimedia
Impreza is fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen is fitted, and the system is equipped with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ integration and DAB radio.

A new combination meter is also included, which provides additional detail to the driver, such as the status of EyeSight. A Multi-Function Display sits on top of the dash and this provides at-a-glance information on key vehicle systems.

Packaging
Impreza has been re-packaged for improved interior comfort and versatility. The car is 10mm lower, 35mm wider and has a 25mm longer wheelbase.

The cabin is wider by 29mm at the front and 34mm at the rear and has 26mm more rear seat leg room. Maximum luggage capacity has also increased by 5 litres by having a 100mm wider boot opening and the depth of the boot is also longer by 41mm.

UK Specification
In the UK, Impreza will be available in one trim; SE with a choice of 1.6 or 2.0 Boxer petrol paired to a Lineartronic transmission. A full specification list is at the end of this press pack.

The only difference in equipment between the 1.6 and 2.0 models is PaddleShift is fitted to 2.0 Impreza and not available on 1.6.

Impreza will be available in a choice of six colours, with Crystal White Pearl free of charge, and all other colours priced at £550.

The platform is the fundamental technology for all next-generation Subaru models going forward in conjunction with Boxer engines, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight. Impreza is the second model to be launched on the new platform, following XV’s debut at Geneva earlier in the year.

For Impreza, SGP provides a 40% increase in body strength and significantly increased rigidity for a tighter chassis response as well as performing highly in crash testing. In Japanese NCAP testing, the Subaru Impreza won the Grand Prix Award for earning the highest score on record; 199.7 points out of 208.

SGP has been engineered with two main objectives in mind; dynamic quality and safety performance.

Dynamic Quality
One of the core benefits of the SGP is improved driving capability and dynamic feel.

For a dynamic driving feel, straight line stability and handling needs to be high, noise and vibration needs to be low and the ride comfort needs to be compliant yet firm. 

Chassis rigidity for increased straight-line stability

Because the chassis is more rigid and stable in a straight line, steering response is significantly improved which increases the driver’s confidence in the car allowing them to react to hazards and position the car exactly where needed.

The chassis frame work is also smoother which adds to the torsional rigidity of the platform.

Noise and Vibration
A key development goal for SGP was to reduce floor and steering vibration.

The chassis design effectively disperses chassis and seat resonance which cuts back on vibrations from the steering, floor and seats.

This result has been achieved by adopting adhesive for structures across the platform which suppresses deformation of flanges and sections of the chassis.

Ride Comfort
The ride quality has been designed to be firm, but comfortable.

Suspension mount rigidity has been increased which ensures the damper moves as intended by ensuring the mounting point has minimal flex and is holding the damper securely in place.

The rear stabilisers are also mounted directly to the chassis which reduces body roll compared to previous models.

Safety Performance
SGP has potential to maintain the highest standard of collision safety through to 2025, as its structure has been designed to incorporate a high strength design and more durable materials.

A by-product of the various improvements to the chassis is significantly enhanced emergency handling; the vehicle responds quickly, even at a higher speed.

Body strength has been increased by 40% allowing the chassis to absorb more energy in the event of a collision. This has been achieved by increasing the cross section of the frame and using hot press moulded sections at key points on the chassis.

A smoother frame layout is also used with three conduction routes versus two conduction routes with a smooth outer leg versus the previously used dog-leg design.

Safety Systems
Safety is a key focus of the all-new Impreza, with a suite of advanced driver assist systems in addition to traditional safety equipment.

EyeSight
EyeSight is Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology, which acts as a second pair of eyes for the driver.

EyeSight was developed with three objectives in mind; safety, lowering carbon emissions by reducing incident congestion and economic effects of this by reducing time sat in traffic as a result.

Subaru have been developing driver assistance technology for nearly 30 years;

  • 1989 – System development starts.
  • 1999 – Active Driving Assist (ADA), EyeSight’s predecessor, is launched.
  • 2003 – New ADA developed – “Sensor Fusion System” featuring stereo camera and radar.
  • 2006 – SI- Cruise Control by laser radar.
  • 2008 – EyeSight introduced to Japanese market with stereo camera only.
  • 2010 – EyeSight v.2 introduced in North America.
  • 2014 – EyeSight v.3 introduced into Europe.
  • 2017 – EyeSight is being introduced into all Subaru markets globally.

In the UK, Outback was the first model to be fitted with EyeSight followed by Levorg in early 2017 and Forester in Autumn 2017. Going forwards, EyeSight will be introduced across the range.

The institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis in Japan produced a study of Subaru vehicles involved in accidents 2010-2014 and found that there were 61% fewer accidents involving EyeSight equipped cars versus cars without EyeSight.

Globally, the milestone of 1 million EyeSight-equipped vehicles on the road was hit in 2016.

EyeSight uses two stereo cameras to capture three-dimensional colour images with excellent image recognition, and is nearly as capable as the human eye. EyeSight can recognise vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, pedestrians, and lane markings and can differentiate between these and determine the general traffic conditions. This differs from radar based collision avoidance systems which only recognise if there is an object present or not, meaning these systems can respond to objects that are not a risk, such as skips or road signs.

With an emphasis on real-world tests and evaluations, EyeSight has been developed to correspond exclusively to the individual country’s traffic conditions.

One camera is mounted each side of the rear-view mirror to monitor the road and traffic ahead for potential hazards up to 110 metres up the road. EyeSight takes an image from each camera and compares these images to determine the distance of this object. The larger the displacement of each image, the closer the object is.

Depending on the vehicle’s speed, accidents can be completely avoided and the severity significantly reduced at higher speeds.

EyeSight consists of six different technologies;

Technology

Description

Pre-Collision Braking

EyeSight will alert the driver of a potential collision using a visual and audible warning.  If the driver does not take evasive action, the brakes will be applied automatically to either prevent the accident entirely or reduce the severity of an impact depending on the vehicle speed.  If the driver brakes but does not apply enough pressure, the system will increase braking force.

Pre-Collision Throttle Management

If the car is parked facing an obstacle, EyeSight will warn (visual and audible) the driver if they accidentally select drive instead of reverse.  The system will also cut engine output to help avoid a frontal collision.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adjusts vehicle speed to maintain a set distance from the car in front.  

Lane Departure & Sway Warning

The driver will be alerted with a visual and audible warning if the vehicle sways or departs its lane without indicating.

Lane Keep Assist

The system will offer gentle steering control if the vehicle is about to deviate from its lane at approximately 40mph or above.

Lead Vehicle Start Alert

It will prompt the driver, with a visual and audible warning, that traffic ahead has started moving.

 

Active Safety Systems
In addition to EyeSight, Impreza is fitted with a number of systems to aid the driver with everyday manoeuvres such as reversing out of bays, and driving on twisty roads, leaving them to fully focus on the road.

High Beam Assist & steering responsive headlights
Impreza is fitted with bi-functional projector LED lights, with a single bulb enabling High Beam Assist to switch between high and low beam automatically. High Beam Assist operates via a single-lens camera, which is installed in the rear view mirror and detects when an onward car is approaching.

The lights are also steering responsive, turning to the left or right depending on the driver’s steering input and illuminates more of the corner.

Both technologies enhance visibility at night, and provide a safe, reassuring experience for the driver.

Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)
Impreza is the third Subaru in Europe to be fitted with the Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD) suite of safety technologies.

The system helps the driver to change lanes on the motorway safely or detect hard to see hazards when completing low speed manoeuvres. SRVD is a radar-based system, with radars fitted beneath the Impreza’s tail lamps and covered by the rear bumper, detecting vehicles to either side of the car.

SRVD is a package of three technologies, designed to alert the driver to potential hazards behind the vehicle:

  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD) detects vehicles in the driver’s blind spots to the rear of the car, and alerts drivers to their presence with a subtle LED light on the mirrors.
  • Lane Change Assist (LCA) warns the driver if another vehicle approaches the rear of the car in a neighbouring lane. If the driver attempts to change lanes at that moment, the system warning light flashes.
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) issues a visual and audible alert to warn the driver of vehicles passing behind the car when reversing out of a parking space.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive
Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is Subaru’s unique All-Wheel Drive system. Subaru’s system is completely symmetrical front to rear, left to right. The advantage of this combination over a traditional 4WD set up is the weight of the engine and gearbox are spread across the front axle with equal length drive shafts, resulting in perfect weight distribution across the chassis as well as a straight route for traction to all wheels.

 Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is a permanent system, equipping Impreza with drive to all four wheels whether off-road in a muddy field or on a rainy motorway.

An active torque split system is installed in Impreza, which is specifically designed for Lineartronic equipped cars. Multi Plate Transfer (MPT) adjusts torque distribution front to rear to suit changing driving conditions with a base torque split of 60:40 biased to the front. The advantage of this system is it is user friendly, with no driver input required and adds reassurance for the driver that they will always have traction when it is required.

Boxer Engine
Boxer Engines are integral to what makes a Subaru a Subaru, the engine takes its name from the punch-counterpunch motion of the horizontal pistons within a lightweight, aluminium-alloy engine block.

Using a Boxer engine means that the engine can be positioned in line with the drivetrain for maximum transfer of power. Many other engines are transverse or perpendicular, which can require additional drivetrain components to transfer power, which results in reduced vehicle efficiency when compared to a Boxer engine.

The punch-counterpunch movements of the pistons balance each other out, which means the engine is smoother with reduced vibrations and noise. Additionally, the unit provides a lower centre of gravity and in turn, exquisite handling and poise plus greatly reduced roll when cornering.

Impreza will come with a choice of a 1.6 or 2.0 Boxer engine in the UK.

1.6
The 1.6 engine is from the FB series, and is port injected. 70% of the components in the engine have been redesigned.

The compression ratio has been increased from 10.5:1 to 11.0:1, the overall engine weight has been reduced by 14kgs, 1.1kg from the cylinder heads, 1.2kg from the crank pulley and 1.8kgs from the cylinder block.   

Rotational inertia has been reduced by 6%, vibration reduced by 5% and torsional rigidity has been improved by 10%. Gas flow into the combustion chamber has also been improved.

The series of revisions have ensured that vibration and noise are significantly reduced, and acceleration response has been improved for a more linear feel.

2.0
The 2.0 is also from the FB series of engines and was fitted in the outgoing XV, and is direct injected. 80% of the engine has been redesigned, including a 12kg weight reduction. This is the first time Impreza hatch has been available with the larger 2.0 litre engine in the UK range.

The compression ratio has been increased from 10.5:1 to 12.5:1, and a new tumble generation valve and port internal baffle has been fitted to the intake which revises air flow in the intake, increasing airflow into the cylinder in order achieve a better mixture and improved fuel efficiency. Another result of development has led to the highest brake thermal efficiency in its class.

Fuel cooling has been harnessed in conjunction with reduced pressure loss throughout the intake and exhaust systems for increased power versus outgoing Impreza.

The rigidity of the engine block has been increased, and additional mounting points help to minimise vibrations and reduce noise across various engine operating ranges. In addition, this adds to a more consistent feel between acceleration performance and the engine noise.

Lineartronic Transmission
Lineartronic is the first Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) adopted for AWD use. Lineartronic has been designed specifically for use with Boxer engines and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to optimise fuel consumption via a stepless gear ratio and optimal power band.

Lineartronic combines a torque converter with lockup damper and a CVT system which offers a wider ratio coverage than a traditional automatic transmission, which improves drivability and fuel economy. The torque converter also includes a creep facility for ease of use in traffic.

On Lineartronic equipped petrol models, Single pinion planetary gears and a hydraulic multi-disc clutch are combined for forward/reverse changeover and this is located after the secondary pulley.

The lockup damper specially designed for Lineartronic has significantly improved the damping of torque fluctuations, meaning the typical CVT “surge” has been dramatically reduced as well as providing the driver with a realistic acceleration response. The auto stepped speed control matches engine noise to acceleration performance.

For the best of both worlds, a manual mode is also included which can be selected via the gear lever or paddle shift on the steering wheel (on 2.0 Impreza only). The driver has the option to use this facility on a temporary basis for flexibility by using the paddles when the gear selector is in the Drive position, and the system returns to drive mode should no further paddle input be received. For additional traction, the driver can choose to set off in 2nd gear by putting the gear selector into manual and flicking the upshift paddle.

For Impreza, the ratio coverage has been widened and the weight of the transmission has been reduced by 7.8kgs versus the outgoing car. This increases acceleration performance and fuel efficiency. 

Impreza Design
Subaru’s design philosophy for Impreza is DYNAMIC x SOLID – a dynamic urban influenced design contrasted against a fit-for-purpose aesthetic, form backing function in a well-designed package with nothing extra added.

Exterior
The design philosophy has been diffused into a Sporty & Advanced package.

The design is a tougher, more dynamic iteration of Impreza with the Subaru hexagonal grille and hawk-eye headlight family face, reminiscent of the profile of a Boxer engine.

The design is built on the proportions of outgoing Impreza, but with sharper lines focused towards the rear of the vehicle. The wings are also contoured to emphasise the wheel arches, hinting at All-Wheel Drive capability. The wheels are 17-inch alloys, which are one inch larger than the outgoing Impreza’s.

At the rear, the lamps are positioned to jut out from the shoulder line on the body where the profile lines converge to create a dynamic appearance.

Functional elements are also included to ensure Impreza is fit for purpose, such as a raked back windscreen and lower roofline at the rear to increase aerodynamic performance.

Impreza is equipped with keyless entry and push button start. The driver’s door handle has a touch sensor to open and lock the doors, and the button starts the engine when the brake is depressed.

Interior
The all-new Impreza’s interior has been designed to make sure the driver is free to focus on the road ahead and enjoy driving the car.

The Interior design philosophy has been translated into a Bold & Refined theme which mirrors the exterior. The dash profile is heavily sculptured and is a continuous piece with metallic surrounds on the instrument panel, steering wheel and gear stick.  

The seats have been designed with a sculpted shape to provide the driver with support in key areas and make long distance drives comfortable. The fabric on the seats is in a contrast design of black fabric and black woven tricot material.

The quality of soft touch plastics and finishes have been improved across the interior, without losing the functionality and hard-wearing features that Subaru customers love.

Multimedia
Impreza is fitted with an 8-inch touchscreen is fitted, and the system is equipped with Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ integration and DAB radio.

A new combination meter is also included, which provides additional detail to the driver, such as the status of EyeSight. A Multi-Function Display sits on top of the dash and this provides at-a-glance information on key vehicle systems.

Packaging
Impreza has been re-packaged for improved interior comfort and versatility. The car is 10mm lower, 35mm wider and has a 25mm longer wheelbase.

The cabin is wider by 29mm at the front and 34mm at the rear and has 26mm more rear seat leg room. Maximum luggage capacity has also increased by 5 litres by having a 100mm wider boot opening and the depth of the boot is also longer by 41mm.

UK Specification
In the UK, Impreza will be available in one trim; SE with a choice of 1.6 or 2.0 Boxer petrol paired to a Lineartronic transmission. A full specification list is at the end of this press pack.

The only difference in equipment between the 1.6 and 2.0 models is PaddleShift is fitted to 2.0 Impreza and not available on 1.6.

Impreza will be available in a choice of six colours, with Crystal White Pearl free of charge, and all other colours priced at £550.
